From our President

Dear All

I want to thank you for your cooperation when asked to supply extra personal details required by the Oliva Ayuntamiento. Although onerous, we have had to comply with these requirements for the continuance of all of the U3A Oliva groups. For those of you who have still to respond to emails asking for this information, I would urge you to check your Spam folder in case they have inadvertently arrived there.

November is usually a wet month, however, it was good to see some of the half yearly celebrations of the Moors and Christians taking place as we have had a long time without street parades.

Although most of us are booster vaccinated against Covid and influenza, I would ask you to continue to take precautions against this disease by protecting yourself and others in public places where personal space is limited. Only by being vigilant can we minimise the risk to ourselves and other people. According to recent visits from my family, we in Spain are to be congratulated for our adherence to the safety rules which have been advised. So, well done to all of us!

On a seasonal note, please check the Christmas Events which have been planned and reserve your place on them as spaces are limited.

On behalf of your Committee,
U3A Oliva President president@u3aoliva.org

Events Christmas 21

Christmas Carols Concert and Singalong

The U3A Choir “Oliva Voices” would like to invite you to attend – and join in – their Christmas Carols Concert and Singalong.
This will take place from 5pm to 6pm on Friday 3 December at the Llar de Jubilats i Pensionistes (on the N332, opposite the Spar shop) on the second floor.

We need attendees to book your seats in advance so that we can control the numbers, due to the current Covid-19 restrictions. So please book soon.

Entrance is free, but donations will be very welcome, to go to the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (Cancer Research association), in memory of members of the Choir who have recently passed away.

The building has a lift, if you need it, and a bar downstairs if you would like to stay on for a drink afterwards.

Please contact Lynda choir@u3aoliva.org to book your seats and please include your phone number. We look forward to seeing you on 3 December!

Salem Amble Christmas Day 2021

Leader: Joe Bellenie  Joebelleniegm@gmail.com Mobile 636 44 32 77

Start time
We meet 11:00 at the Bar L’Era Salem, after coffee we drive to the start of the walk following my car. Friends and family welcome. Due to COVID, I will need the full names and contact details of all attendees.

Route & Description
5K in total, with our picnic break halfway, but hilly and not so good underfoot in places, so stout footwear and sticks are recommended. Dogs are welcome but should be kept under control at the rear of the group.
The festive picnic is to share. We lay tables with Christmas table cloths and spread out the goodies. We usually take a selection of festive tapas plus Cava. Bring whatever you think is suitable, not forgetting cutlery and plates etc.
If bad weather occurs I will email you on the evening before the walk and again by 09:30 on Christmas morning.

Monthly Quiz

I´m so sorry but I had to cancel the November Quiz. The response had been very poor for some reason and it was just not viable to do it with the low number of teams that had entered.

I will be away for Christmas so I am going to start the Quiz again in February next year, hopefully, when the Covid situation has improved.

Thanks for your patience and understanding and I hope we can meet for a Quiz early in the New Year.

Info to Members

Keeping Informed

We are looking at how we can communicate with our members more effectively. Some of you may have seen the thread on out Facebook Page about some members not knowing about upcoming events.

Speaking to members we have been told that not all members read this Newsletter – and I guess they won’t be reading this – and also many don’t visit the website. These, together with Facebook posts, are are only way  of keeping you informed so we really need our membership to read the monthly newsletter and / or visit the website.

However to simplify the email side we will in future be sending out more single issue emails as we have done with information about the Christmas 21 Events. This does mean there will be more emails from us and we hope this won’t be too intrusive.

Membership Cards

All membership numbers and cards have been issued to those members where subs have been paid. If you know someone that hasn’t received their’s then please ask them to contact the Membership Secretary

Potential groups

We have a number of potential groups listed on the GROUPS page  – if we receive enough interest in any of these we will endeavour to start them up as a fully fledged group. For some of these we have one or two members waiting but we do need more people in order to make any group viable.
Recent new potential groups are GOLF and MAHJONG, for which we have two members who are prepared to be Group Leaders – so if you are interested in these, or any of the other potential groups, please contact the U3A Group Coordinator

Update Your Details

The U3A Oliva communicates with you, it’s members, primarily through email so it’s important that to ensure  that @u3aoliva.org is on your email programs permitted senders list AND check your junk/spam folder.

We also regularly post current information in the members area of this site so please visit frequently. If you’ve lost your login details then contact the webmaster.

Also in these difficult times it may be necessary to contact individual members urgently so having your current phone number on our records is important. It’s easy to let us know by using this form. If you’re unsure that we have your correct details then just fill in the form anyway. You will need to be logged in as a member to use the form.

Groups and Roles in the U3A

We need someone to do Publicity for the U3A Oliva both to let members know what’s happeninng and to raise the profile of the U3A Oliva.

Although due to Covid we are not doing much un the way of events we do also need a Travel and Events Coordinator. If you would like to help please email president@u3aoliva.org

We also have a number of Groups which do not have a leader so they are not active. If you feel that you would like to talk about taking any of these groups over please contact groups@u3aoliva.org

These other groups are:
Dance Latin American
Dressmaking / Sewing
Metal Detecting
Stand-up paddle boarding
Social cycling

If any of you have any special interests which you feel might be of interest to other members, please get in touch with The President or the Group Coordinator and we’ll discuss whether there might be the possibility of forming a new U3A Oliva group
