Close up of Pétanque game

Pétanque is a form of boules that derives from the expression pès tancats [ˈpɛs taŋˈkats], meaning ‘feet together’.

A relatively simple but fun and sociable game, the aim is to throw hollow metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet (literally “piglet”) or jack, while standing inside a starting circle with both feet on the ground (Pétanque).

Please come along and watch or ‘try’… we have spare sets of boules you can use… so no outlay is required!

Singles club competitions are held in June and December each year with members playing to win and hold the Alice McDade Memorial Trophy. Winners get to hold the trophy for six months.

There is also a doubles competition each year with members competing for the Alan Mayhew Memorial Trophy. This competition takes place just before the summer.

Those wishing to compete for the trophies must attend Pétanque at least six times a year.
