Art History trip to Madrid

Event type: Trips
Date: Tuesday 3rd December 2024
Duration: 4 days
Until: Friday 6th December 2024
Group: History & Appreciation of Art
Organiser:
Robert Sedgley

The History and Appreciation of Art group is organising a visit to Madrid for three nights from Tuesday the third of December, returning on Friday the sixth of December.

The main attraction is the newly opened Gabriele Münter exhibition at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, however there are many other attractions to the city: cultural and cuisine, parks and promenades.

Gabriel Münter (1877-1962) was a pupil and then partner of Wassily Kandinsky. She was at the forefront of modern art in the early twentieth century and a founder member of the German expressionist art group The Blue Rider. As with many women artists her achievement and contribution to developments in the history of art has been largely overlooked and regarded as subsidiary to that of male artists. Her work is now being reassessed and her true standing recognised in this new exhibition.

u3a members and friends are welcome to join this trip. As well as a visit to the exhibition, there is plenty of time to explore the city. Please note that you'll need to arrange transport and hotel accommodation.
