News from u3a Oliva (October 2024)

Here's the latest news from u3a Oliva - emailed to members on 30th October.

New members, new groups, new dance class

Most of you have now resubscribed, and I would like to thank you for your support and commitment. We are starting this year with more members than we ended last year, which is great news.

All the new groups that have started are well supported, Bingo is popular as a social evening, We hope to continue them from November - we just need to confirm the timing with Tasca Olivense. Keep an eye on our Facebook page and website for more information.

We've also been approached by a member who is offering Latin Dancing for Fun. There's more about that in Carol-Ann's update below.

Shoebox gifts, packed with toys

Shoebox appeal 2024

I'm really pleased to announce that our Christmas shoebox appeal will be running again this festive season. We'll be collecting gifts for disadvantaged kids at one of our local schools - El Bastidor. We've supported them for many years, and I hope members can help this year.

We've set a target of 75 shoeboxes this year, to make sure that all the children ages 6 to 10 get a gift. Please do what you can to help.

Dates for your diary

  • If you're a new member, or want to meet new people, then why not join us for the Meet & Greet on Friday 8th. You'll find us at the rear of the indoor market from 11:00 to 12:30.
  • Our Christmas Craft Fayre will be back on November 28th - more information soon. In the meantime, if you'd like a stall, then email president@u3aoliva.org asap.
  • And on Thursday 5th December, we'll celebrate Christmas with a sing-a-long and mince pies. Keep an eye out for news.

Great news and new groups

Bitesize Spanish and Practical Valenciano for beginners are very popular, maybe because they only run for 6 weeks at a time. New 6 week sessions will start again in the New Year. Click through to their group pages for more information, and contact the group leader to sign up.

Chair Yoga has seen many members requesting a place and all seem to be enjoying themselves.

Latin Dancing

If you fancy a quick rumba or salsa to help keep fit or just for fun, then you are in for a treat with our Latin Dancing for fun group. Anthony, one of our members, has offered his time to help everyone enjoy themselves for an hour or so a week.

And we're also planning a monthly social, where everyone can meet up to practice and enjoy a few hours of dancing. That might be Saturdays nights, once a month. More news soon.

Small group Spanish lessons

We have lots of ways to help you learn, improve and practice your Spanish. But if you prefer to learn in a smaller group or 1-2-1. then we have arranged a discount with our language tutor Vicki. Groups of 4 for example, are just 10€ per person (normally 12€).

There are a lot of groups that have been asked about (art, drawing, dancing or an extra lunch club) or in the process of being organised/set up. please do check the groups page to find out more information. And don't forget. if you can teach a new subject or help set up a new group, please send me an email.

When attending a group please make sure the tutor has your new membership number for the register. Your membership number was included in the email after registering online, and should also have been emailed with your membership confirmation. Email members@u3aoliva.org if you need help finding it.

I am here to help members if you have any health issues or need support from a member for shopping or transport. please do get in touch.

I now have a good sized list of volunteers to help members with transport, translating, dog walking, pet feeding, lifts to appointments etc.. Please contact me if you have an emergency or need help.  Either WhatsApp me on +34672510915 or send me an email.

And if you can offer up your time for dog walking, shopping, social visits, lifts to the medical centre etc, then please get in touch.

We also have a list of English speaking tradespeople or businesses available online too.

There are some lovely places to visit, near and far, however it takes one person a lot of time to organise a trip, it takes two people less time each and three even less. The travel team need more members to help them; A bonus if you speak enough Spanish to help book a coach or a venue (but not essential).

If all the workload is shared it becomes more enjoyable rather than a chore. Please contact travel@u3aoliva.org or president@u3aoliva.org if you can help out /willing to take the lead on a trip, or just need more information.
